Gas Spot Trader

Our client is seeking a Gas Spot Trader to support a growing European gas trading desk. The successful candidate will be involved in a range of trading, operational, and analytical activities, including position management, market analysis, risk monitoring, and post-trade review. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual with experience in European natural gas markets who is looking to develop within a collaborative and fast-paced trading environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute short-term gas trading strategies across Day-Ahead, Within-Day, and futures markets, both manually and through semi-automated processes.
  • Support position and risk management activities across the trading desk.
  • Participate in desk coverage outside standard market hours on a rotational basis where required.
  • Assist with operational processes including trade booking, nominations, capacity management, confirmations, and reconciliations.
  • Conduct market research and post-trade analysis to support the ongoing enhancement of trading strategies.
  • Work closely with quantitative, technology, risk, and operations teams to support trading activity and resolve issues.
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of trading tools, systems, and models.
  • Monitor trading positions, market developments, and relevant fundamental drivers throughout the trading day.
  • Assist with daily PnL reporting and position analysis.
  • Ensure all trading activity is conducted in accordance with applicable regulatory and compliance requirements.
  • Liaise with brokers, exchanges, clearing firms, and internal stakeholders to ensure accurate trade capture and settlement.

Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, Finance, Economics, or a related quantitative discipline.
  • 2–4 years of experience trading financial products and/or physical commodities.
  • Exposure to European gas, power, energy, or related commodity markets is advantageous.
  • Strong analytical, quantitative, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with Python or other programming languages is beneficial.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a team environment.
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated work ethic, intellectual curiosity, and desire to succeed in a trading environment.
