The FinTech industry has experienced unprecedented growth in recent years, revolutionising the way financial services are delivered and disrupting traditional banking and financial services models. While the sector is dynamic and promising, the path to success for black professionals in FinTech, I believe, presents unique challenges. The proportion of black people working in fintech in the UK is unfortunately barely 3%. In this article, I will explore essential strategies for promotion, networking, and advancement, specifically tailored to empower black FinTech professionals on their journey to success.
Promotion Strategies
Seek Mentorship: Throughout my career to date, I have seen how your network truly is your net worth. Establishing a strong mentorship network can significantly impact your career trajectory. Seek out mentors who are successfully navigating the FinTech landscape and can provide guidance tailored to your unique experiences and career goals. I suggest leveraging mentorship programmes offered by your company or external communities which can be a great place to start.
Showcase your Achievements: Actively document and communicate your professional achievements. Whether it's successfully implementing a new technology, hosting an event, or improving processes, don't be shy about documenting and then sharing your contributions. I actually keep an ‘achievement list’, which is an Excel tracker of my achievements including details about them and when they happened. This is a real hack for when promotion and year’s end comes round.
Continuous Learning: FinTech is a rapidly evolving industry, and staying ahead requires a commitment to continuous learning. Invest time in acquiring new skills, obtaining relevant certifications, and staying informed about industry trends. Demonstrate your dedication to professional development to position yourself as a valuable asset within your organisation.
Networking
Join Industry Groups and communities: I’m not just saying this as a community builder (I run the Now You’re Talking Network) but industry communities have been a game changer for me. Connecting with like-minded professionals outside of your industry can help propel your career forward and also provides a supportive community for you throughout key challenges and milestones in your career.
Attend Conferences and Events: Actively participate in conferences, seminars, and networking events within the FinTech industry. These gatherings offer a chance to connect with professionals, potential mentors, and industry leaders. Additionally, I’ve seen how public speaking, participating in panel discussions or presenting your work can enhance your visibility and credibility within the sector. Each year, I speak at over 50 events and I have seen a tremendous impact on my career and network as a result.
Advancement Strategies
Seek Leadership Opportunities: Actively pursue leadership roles within your organisation or industry. Volunteer for projects that align with your career goals and showcase your leadership abilities. Whether it's leading a cross-functional team or spearheading an innovation initiative, taking on challenging assignments demonstrates your readiness for advancement.
Build a Personal Brand: In this digital-first world, I believe curating your personal brand is imperative! Cultivate a personal brand that reflects your expertise and values. This involves consistently sharing your knowledge through thought leadership and actively engaging in and cultivating professional conversations. Leverage platforms like LinkedIn, Twitter, and even industry-specific forums to build your online presence. Share insights, engage in conversations, and follow key influencers in the FinTech space. Establishing a strong online presence and personal brand will enhance your visibility and attract opportunities for collaboration and advancement.
Overall, for black professionals especially, I call out success in the FinTech industry requiring a strategic approach to promotion, prioritising networking, and seeking advancement. All the best and let me know how you get on!
