This corporate finance/mergers and acquisitions BI software vendor builds SaaS solutions to provide competitive and market information to large corporate clients regarding the sectors on which they operate. It uses best-in-class data processing and machine learning techniques to gather data from public sources, financials, press releases, etc. The software then structures, analyses and renders the data in a visual and interactive web-browser-based interface. Primary users of the tool are corporate decision-makers (e.g. board members, management teams, investors, etc.).

The London-based start-up was founded by a former partner in a large cap Private Equity firm to meet an unaddressed need he had as board member of several companies. After a year of development, a prototype/proof of concept of the product is near completion and the first large-ticket sale agreements are being formalized. Fundraising for a significant seed round is well underway also.

The CEO is looking for a Head of Architecture and Development to recruit and coordinate a team of developers, improve/rebuild the architecture, increase automation and coordinate the first large scale deployments. Versatility and a taste for complex problems are essential; tasks performed to include:

  • Scraping, information extraction
  • Machine learning, Natural Language Processing
  • Database architecture and management
  • Web-application and API design and development

The current tech stack is listed below, however this is a first iteration of the architecture and plenty of decisions are yet to be made for the large scale and industrial strength version of the platform. The person joining this role will need to assess the current tech stack and provide a design and roadmap to build a commercial quality, scalable platform to facilitate rapid growth of the business, therefore the stack below will likely evolve/change, Java for example or similar will likely feature in the future.

  • Ruby on Rails for the web app's back end
  • PostgreSQL for main database
  • MongoDB as database for web app - but not fond of it
  • A bit of Python for scraping, etc.

This is an opportunity to join a company as the first employee and to play a key role in driving the business forwards to become a major presence in the mergers and acquisitions sector, the role can offer a strong initial salary, however there is significant equity on offer here for the person who joins at this point. This role will likely become CTO as the company grows and the need for such a title/function arises.
